Ladislav Nagy and the Phoenix Coyotes agreed to a one year deal today. The deal is worth $3 million and was decided by an arbitrator. According to GM Michael Barnett, the team really wants a multiyear deal with Ladislav Nagy, but they are willing to take this one year deal for now.
The Kings and Sean Avery have come to terms on a one year deal for next season. The deal is worth $1.1 million. By doing this deal, the Kings will avoid arbitration. Avery is known as a bad boy, on and off the ice. Speculation is that this deal included some strict guidelines to help curb his behavior. He’s had issues with following team orders in the past. The Kings are not so sure that is behind him.
The Oilers came close to winning the Stanley Cup last season. If not for an unlucky event that forced them to go to a backup goalie, they may have made a run at it. Well, the Oilers want to get back there and it starts with Coach Craig MacTavish. According to reports, MacTavish and the Oilers have agreed on a deal to keep in him Oilers territory.
The Philadelphia Flyers have added a veteran to their team. They came to terms with Geoff Sanderson. The 34 year old had 25 goals and 21 assists last season. He’s going to be a solid addition to the Flyers. Last season Sanderson was skating for the Phoenix Coyotes. So far the terms of the contract have not been disclosed.
Ken Daneyko was arrested for DUI. Daneyko is a former defenseman for the New Jersey Devils. Next month he is going to face his charges in court. He’s had problems with alcohol before and it looks like nothing has changed. Daneyko was in his SUV and swerving around when police in Sparta spotting him and pulled him over.
Michael Peca has decided that it was time to move on from the almost Cinderella storied Edmonton Oilers. His services were requested in Toronto and Peca has decided to make the move. Peca and the Toronto Maple Leafs signed a one-year deal. Toronto will receive the services of this valuable veteran for about $2.5 million.
The Stanley Cup champions, Carolina Hurricanes, have re-signed left winger Erik Cole. Cole and the Hurricanes agreed to a three-year, $12 million deal today. If you remember, Cole missed the last 22 games of the season due to a neck injury. However, the managed to score 30 goals. He also had 29 assists and 59 points in 2006. It’s quite amazing considering the shortened playing time.
On Sunday, the Nashville Predators got a little better. They signed free agent center, Jason Arnott. The deal is worth $22.5 million over five years. Jason Arnott is now 31 years old. He played for the Dallas Stars last season and had a career-high 44 assists. He’s a cagey veteran who will bring solid experience to the team. Arnott has played in 91 career Stanley Cup games and two Stanley Cup Finals over his 14 year career.
Last night the Carolina Hurricanes won the Stanley Cup by defeating the Edmonton Oilers in game 7, 3-1. Cam Ward won the Conn Smythe Trophy. The Edmonton Oilers gave it a good ride, but in the end, the Hurricanes were simply too much. It was a close game. The Hurricanes were up 2-1 until their empty netter at the end of the game.
The Stanley Cup Finals took a sudden turn of events when the Oilers won in game 5 thanks to a lazy pass and then dominated at home in game 6. The Hurricanes were one OT goal away from a Stanley Cup—and they were on a power play now less. Now, they find themselves at home with the series tied 3-3 and facing a win or go home game seven. How did this all happen? The Oilers were distraught and ready to go down for the count.
