We’re closing in on the Stanley Cup, but you can still bet NHL futures at most sportsbooks. This morning, I decided to visit a couple sportsbooks to see what the lines were like and if there was any value left.

If you think the Buffalo Sabres, Ottawa Senators, or Anaheim Mighty Ducks are going to win the Stanley Cup—or even be in the finals—there’s no value playing the futures. All three of these teams pay poorly—+260 to +310 on average. That’s not great considering each of these teams—after advancing this round—has to play another series and then cap it off by winning yet another series.

You’re better off betting individual games or looking for series prices.

The San Jose Sharks are probably the best value in the bunch. They are tied 2-2 with the Detroit Red Wings—playing today. You can get +300 on them winning the Western Conference Championship and +710 on them winning the 2007 Stanley Cup.

If you’re a hedger, there might be action to play on the New Jersey Devils. They are down 3-1 to Ottawa and playing tonight. They are giving +1500 to win the Western Conference Championship. Bet that and then start putting money down on Ottawa to win the series. I’m not saying you should do that, but if that’s the type of sports bettor you are, I’m sure there’s a decent math formula to ensure some money.
