Week one of the NHL, which was a short week, is over. Despite there only being a few games played, there are already some surprises and calls for alarm. Fox Sports has issued their week one power rankings for the NHL and we are going to take a quick peak. Since this is week one, this is part one in the series. Each week we will take a look at the power rankings to see how teams progress.

The Buffalo Sabres are ranked number one and rightfully so in my opinion. They looked great in their first three games. They are 3-0 now. Their first win was over last season’s Stanley Cup holders—Carolina Hurricanes. The Hurricanes look a bit out of sync this season so far. Fox Sports has the Hurricanes (0-3) at #27. Next, the Sabres battled #9 ranked Montreal Canadiens and came out victorious. Finally, the Sabers took out #25 ranked Ottawa.

The Top Ten teams are:

1. Buffalo Sabres
2. Dallas Stars
3. San Jose Sharks
4. Anaheim Ducks
5. New York Rangers
6. Minnesota Wild
7. Atlanta Thrashers
8. Columbus Blue Jackets
9. Montreal Canadiens
10. Vancouver Canucks

It’s only week one, so there’s not much argument to be made of their power rankings. I expect that we’ll see a couple teams drop out of this top 10 next week. Will the Buffalo Sabres still be number one? According to the Fox Sports rankings, the first six teams are all pretty much tied.

So, who’s on the bottom? Here are the bottom five teams. Expect to see at least one move up after this week’s play.

26. Philadelphia Flyers
27. Carolina Hurricanes
28. New York Islanders
29. St. Louis Blues
30. Nashville Predators

I’m expecting the Carolina Panthers to move up. They are not a bottom 5 team despite their sluggish start to the new season.
