Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Finals is on tonight at 8:00 pm EST between the Edmonton Oilers and the Carolina Hurricanes—in Carolina. Edmonton’s veteran goalie, Dwayne Roloson, is done for the season thanks to a freak play in the third period of game one. Pretty much everyone has written the Oilers off for this series. Roloson was the reason why the Oilers were competitive and why they got this far. Or was he?
I watched game one and what I saw was not a miracle goalie performance. What I saw was an on fire Edmonton club that had a seemingly relentless attack. If they were not completely shut down on their power plays, they would have won game one. The game finished 5-4, which is not the score of a team requiring a god-like performance in goal.
Currently the Carolina Hurricanes are -175 and I have seen it higher in some places. The Edmonton Oilers are +155. The under/over tonight is 6 with the over being -125. The public basically feels this game is a lock for Carolina and the line reflects that. However, I would like to make the argument that caution should be used before leaping into this huge line.
While the Oilers might have a new goalie, let’s not forget that Carolina still has Cam Ward—a goalie that gave up 4 goals and almost a few more in game one. The Oilers can still score and if they improve on the power play at all, look out. It is uncertain who the replacement will be for the Oilers, but Ty Conklin is a good bet. He took a few shots in game one and blocked them with ease. The mistake that led to the game one win by the Hurricanes was not really his fault. He went behind the net like he should have. No one communicated with him so he thought he was alone, which led to the frantic mistake.
I have always thought that Carolina is the better team, especially at home, but don’t go counting out Edmonton. I saw enough offensive fire in game one to get me off of the Carolina play for game two. There is no way I lay -175 or greater. If anything, the +155 for Edmonton looks tasty. Either way, this is going to be a great game tonight. If you believe that the new Oilers’ goalie will be rusty and ineffective, you will want to play the over.
